Richland is one of the Tri-Cities in southeastern Washington, built almost entirely around the Hanford site — constructed for the Manhattan Project's plutonium production — and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory that grew out of that same nuclear-research infrastructure. Its nuclear and clean-energy companies descend directly from that Cold War-era foundation, not from a recent clean-tech pivot.
