Los Angeles is a sprawling basin with no single center, home to Hollywood but also, less visibly, to one of the country's largest historic concentrations of aerospace employment — Douglas, Lockheed, and Caltech's JPL all built deep engineering talent there before the "entertainment capital" label took over. USC, UCLA, and Caltech all anchor different corners of that same base, and the render-and-storage infrastructure behind modern film and media is a direct descendant of both industries.
