Centre County is Penn State, almost entirely -- the university is the county's largest employer by a wide margin, and the region's real research base (materials science, agricultural science, and a growing ag-tech and materials-testing industry) grows directly out of it. A genuine one-institution economy, closer in shape to Ames, Iowa than to any of Pennsylvania's other real metro editions.
