The Colorado School of Mines Was Founded in 1874 for a Gold Rush That Ended Decades Ago. It Now Feeds the Country's Second-Largest Aerospace Cluster.

Colorado School of Mines, in Golden, was chartered in 1874 to train engineers for a gold rush that was already past its peak — the oldest public engineering university in Colorado, founded for an industry many assumed was the state's whole economic future.[1] The mining program it was built around is still, by a wide margin, the best in the world — #1 in the QS rankings for Mining and Mineral Engineering, with petroleum engineering, geophysics, and geology all ranked in the global top ten.[1] But the reason Mines still matters to the Denver region isn't mining. It's who its engineering graduates go on to build for now.

Colorado has the second-largest aerospace economy in the country, behind only California — more than 500 aerospace companies and suppliers, and roughly 290 of them classified specifically as aerospace manufacturers or operators.[2] United Launch Alliance, the Lockheed Martin–Boeing joint venture that launches the majority of US national-security satellites, is headquartered in Centennial, just south of Denver, with roughly 3,200 employees.[2] Lockheed Martin Space runs its largest single facility in Littleton — more than 8,000 employees, building NASA's Orion spacecraft for the Artemis lunar program. Ball Aerospace, founded in 1956 and now part of BAE Systems, is headquartered in Broomfield, building satellites and space instruments for NASA and the Department of Defense.[2] The average aerospace salary in the Denver area runs around $120,000.[2]

The connective tissue is Mines' own academic core: earth resources, energy, and applied engineering, not a single fixed industry. A mining and mineral-engineering program is, underneath the label, a deep-technical, extraction-and-materials engineering program — precisely the skill set that satellite manufacturing, propulsion, and space-instrument engineering also run on. Mines even houses a dedicated Mineral and Energy Economics program, treating resource extraction as an economic system to be engineered, not just a technical one.[1] The school built for one resource era kept producing the exact kind of engineer a completely different one would need next.

Denver's economy isn't one story, though, and the aerospace cluster isn't the only overlooked piece of it. Colorado was the first state in the country to legalize recreational cannabis, and the fiscal record is a real, measured one, not a projection: $302 million in state cannabis tax revenue in 2019 alone, with Denver's own dispensary and cultivation licensing creating roughly 4,000 direct jobs in the city.[3] Statewide, the regulated cannabis industry accounted for an estimated 5.4% of all Colorado employment growth in the years immediately after legalization.[3] Two entirely different Denver economies, aerospace and cannabis, both real, both underweighted in how the region usually gets described.

Same lens, a different kind of anchor. In 1994, 48 Companies Kept an Office Near Walmart's Headquarters. By 2001 It Was 445. Today It's Over 1,500 names the pattern for an anchor EMPLOYER: locate the anchor, then look for what grew up around it. Golden runs the identical mechanism through an anchor UNIVERSITY instead — Mines didn't recruit the aerospace industry to Colorado on purpose, but 150 years of training exactly the right kind of engineer built the talent base that industry needed when it arrived.

Neither of Denver's two real economies is the one a school chartered in 1874 for a 19th-century gold rush was built to produce. That's the actual overlooked-worth read here: an anchor institution's value isn't fixed to the industry it was founded for. It's fixed to the kind of thinking it keeps producing, long after the original reason for producing it has passed.
