IBM Filed More AI Patent Applications in 2023 Than Google or Microsoft. Its Own AI Platform Holds a 0.05 Percent Share of the Market It Spent a Decade Patenting.
IBM topped a February 2024 industry count of AI-related U.S. patent applications, filing more in 2023 than Google or Microsoft individually -- the direct result of a 2020 decision to stop chasing overall patent-count leadership and focus filings on AI, hybrid cloud, security, and quantum computing instead. Newly loaded USPTO filing records confirm the pattern down to individual applications and grant numbers. IBM's own commercial AI platform, watsonx.ai, is estimated to hold roughly 0.05 percent of the market those patents describe.
