It began as two nations reading one enemy's mail — Bletchley, BRUSA, the secret UKUSA treaty of 1946 — and grew into five nations with one ear laid against the world. Begin with the honest half: it was necessary, the quiet spine of Western security for eighty years. But an apparatus built to see everything does not keep its aim on the enemy. ECHELON, then Snowden, then the sharpest cost — the swap, by which each government has an ally watch its own citizens and slips the law that restrains it. The eye that guards you is the eye that reads you. Necessary, and the cost is great.

A blight killed the potato; policy killed the people. Read cold, the way an actuary reads a mortality table, the Great Hunger has the shape of a cull: the Gregory clause was the selection rule, emigration the migration, relief levels the quota — and some of the men working the levers welcomed the "consolidation." The survivors' children rose; the diaspora built Irish America; the order that bred the fragility was destroyed. All true, and all obscene. Necessary only in the coldest structural sense, and the distance between necessary and just is a million graves. The arithmetic and the atrocity are the same event.

Every LLM company scales up by renting more datacenter GPUs. Robotics runs that constraint backward: a robot's onboard chip, power, and weight budget are fixed, so the model has to fit the hardware. Real companies solving that constraint are making opposite bets -- Boston Dynamics offloads its robot's reasoning to Google's TPUs, Agility Robotics and Sunday Robotics keep everything onboard, and Weave Robotics runs a hybrid of both -- each for a defensible, different reason, with no industry consensus yet.
