Alaska turned its land settlement into shares. Hawaii's never became shares at all.
Alaska was bought for $7.2 million in 1867, about two cents an acre. A 1971 land settlement split the state's land among corporations rather than a trust like Hawaii's -- which is why, unlike Hawaii, real companies from it sit in this site's own graph today.
