The equity stake used to be rare — three precedents explain why it's back
Since July 2025 the federal government has taken direct equity positions in at least four companies -- Intel, MP Materials, GlobalFoundries, and Westinghouse. That looks unprecedented until you check 2008 and 1979, when the government ran the same play and made money on it both times -- and 2009, when it deliberately didn't, and lost everything it put in.
