Susan B. Anthony, Ida B. Wells, and Marcus Garvey are as much a part of American history as Grant, Coolidge, and Patton -- not adjacent to the main story, the main story. The reason African American Studies and Gender Studies exist as separate departments isn't that their subject matter is separate. It's that students had to strike for over a hundred days to get it taught at all.
