The pit was already there when the fire started
A coal company strip-mined a pit in Centralia, Pennsylvania in 1935 and left it open. A 1962 trash-burning cleanup in that same pit reached the exposed coal seam underneath, and it's been burning ever since -- with enough fuel, by federal estimate, to keep going for another 250 years.
