Katalin Kariko was demoted four times chasing a fix for mRNA's immune-reaction problem, once while being treated for cancer, and was rejected by Nature and Science when she found it in 2005. Fifteen years later, that fix let a coronavirus vaccine ship in under a year. She won the Nobel Prize in 2023.
