Nobody has to work to keep people sorted by class, background, or belief. Sorting is what happens automatically whenever exposure is restricted -- no gatekeeper required. What takes actual, deliberate work is the opposite: building a shelf, a room, or a network wide enough that the sort never gets the chance to happen.
