A security clearance is one of the most overlooked, highest-value credentials in the American labor market, and almost nobody talks about it as a career strategy. General clearance premiums run 10-20% over the same uncleared role, and TS/SCI specifically commands $30,000 to $45,000 over commercial baseline at mid-career. None of it can be pursued directly -- a clearance requires employer sponsorship, not a personal application -- but the jobs that sponsor one disproportionately reward technical aptitude over family connections or elite credentials, which makes it one of the few real, large-scale access mechanisms in the American economy that doesn't start with who you already know.
