New Jersey has been "the Garden State" since real estate ads in the Camden Democrat used the phrase in 1862 -- fourteen years before the 1876 speech popularly, and wrongly, credited with coining it. The name described something real: the sandy, loamy soil of the South Jersey coastal plain, ideal for produce farming. Cranberry bogs have worked the Pine Barrens since 1835. The world's first boardwalk opened in Atlantic City in 1870, built to keep beach sand out of hotel lobbies. Cowtown Rodeo has run every Saturday night in Salem County since 1955, the oldest continuously running weekly rodeo in America, still owned by the same family six generations later. Atlantic City's first legal casino outside Nevada didn't open until May 26, 1978. Everything else on this list is older than gambling in South Jersey by anywhere from a century to a century and a half -- and most of it is still running.
