Madison is Wisconsin's state capital and home to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, one of the country's largest public research universities -- a real, distinct economy built on state government and university research rather than the manufacturing base that defines Milwaukee or Green Bay. Epic Systems, one of the largest private health-records software companies in the country, is headquartered just outside the city in Verona, drawing directly on that same research base. A university-and-government town, closer in shape to Ann Arbor or State College than to either of Wisconsin's other two editions.
