Erie sits on the one Great Lake most of the country forgets touches Pennsylvania at all -- a real freshwater port that built its economy on rail. Erie was GE Transportation's home for over a century, building locomotives there until Wabtec took over the plant in 2019, and the region's advanced-plastics and tool-and-die manufacturing base grew up directly around that same rail and heavy-industry workforce. Not a satellite of Pittsburgh or Cleveland -- a distinct Great Lakes city with its own working port and its own industrial legacy.
