Kansas City runs on a real, quantified track record most editions on this site cannot cite: LaunchKC, the city's flagship non-dilutive grant program, has funded 137 companies since 2015 by its own count, helping attract more than $650 million in follow-on capital and create 1,640 jobs -- with more than two-thirds of recipients women- or minority-led. That 137 blends two real but distinct things: roughly 65 winners of LaunchKC's own core grants competition, and dozens more from partner-run accelerator cohorts it co-brands and co-funds (nbkc's Fountain City FinTech, Nueterra's Launch Health Accelerator, Brush Creek's InsurTech Accelerator, Black & Veatch's IgniteX Cleantech Accelerator) -- and a meaningful share of both groups are based outside the KC metro entirely, funded by the competition but never relocated here. The real venture capital layer sits separately: KCRise Fund is the only traditional VC firm dedicated specifically to the KC region (managing $100M+), alongside Firebrand Ventures (Midwest life sciences) and Flyover Capital, whose own positioning -- "Partners for the Underestimated" -- names the same regional-overlooked thesis this site itself runs on. A real 14-county, bi-state metro (nine Missouri counties, five Kansas), anchored by Jackson County on the Missouri side.
